Mercury retrograde, without the panic

A few times a year, the internet decides Mercury retrograde is why everything went wrong. Your text got misread, your flight got delayed, your ex reappeared. Convenient. Also mostly nonsense. But there's a real thing underneath the noise worth understanding.

What's actually happening

Mercury retrograde is an optical illusion, and a completely predictable one. Mercury orbits the Sun faster than Earth does. A few times a year it overtakes us on the inside lane, and from our vantage point it appears to slow, stop, and drift backward across the sky for about three weeks before it slows, stops, and resumes forward motion.

Nothing about Mercury changes. Our viewing angle does. It's the same effect as a faster car pulling ahead of yours on the highway seeming, for a moment, to roll backward.

Because this is just geometry, it's fully computable. We know every Mercury retrograde for the next century to the minute. There's no mystery in the when, only in what people make of it.

The pattern worth keeping

Astrologically, Mercury governs communication, thinking, small logistics, and technology. The tradition reads its backward phase as a review window rather than a launch window. Not "everything breaks", more like "this is a season for the re-words".

Good for: revising, editing, revisiting, reconnecting, finishing what's half-done, rechecking the details before you commit.

Poor for: signing the brand-new, shipping without a second read, assuming the first version is the final version.

That reframe is genuinely useful, and it survives even if you're skeptical of the astrology. A recurring, marked-off stretch that reminds you to slow down and double-check the communication layer of your life is a reasonable habit. Call it a scheduled proofreading pass.

How it lands depends on your chart

The generic version, "everyone should back up their files", is fine but blunt. Mercury retrograde lands hardest where it falls in your chart: which house it's transiting, and whether it's touching your natal placements. For one person it's a work-communication review. For another it's an old relationship resurfacing. For another it barely registers.
